MLK Day
Happy MLK day. A day celebrating a leader who made a difference by being a difference. His calling was to be at the front, on the podium, to encourage others and share the vision of his purpose. He did not just call others to join him in his purpose but stirred in them in their purpose, a purpose greater than themselves. He moved on a purpose that was noticeably greater than himself but that does not mean that our purpose is any more or less than his. Dr. King was part of a movement that continues today that could only be if God is in it. It has a core use through a purpose impressed onto us by God. That said, we are flawed people operating in a fallen world so the movement is prone to flaws because we are involved. However, it does not mean that the purpose is not pure. We are all created equal in relation to God, to have equal dignity as earthly children of our Heavenly Father who loves us all equally with His unconditional love. The entitlement that we received and receive from Him through His son, Jesus, transcends the hierarchy and division that exists here on earth and cuts through socioeconomic stratus and gender, culture, and color classifications. The rich is not more important nor entitled to more consideration than a poor man, and a Jew is not more entitled to the kingdom of God than a gentile. God has no partiality in His economy. We celebrate Dr. King not only for his leadership but also as a reminder that all of us have a purpose that requires us to step out in faith as Dr. King did. He said, “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” We all have been given something right here, right now, so that we can be what we have been called to be and what we are called to do. That something is Jesus. He is in you and me. He is with us and He is for us. We have everything in and through Him to step out in faith for the purposes He has for us. An activated faith where He will be with us always so we are not left to ourselves. Our role is to accept Him in this faith and not to let ourselves be the barrier or distraction to a purpose greater than ourselves. Father, help us to ask You to use us. To guide us to be what You call us to be, to use us for a purpose greater than ourselves. Amen!
